Genius Hour Rebooted

Let me just start off by saying this project has been difficult for me to wrap my head around. Each time I think of a subject or driving question it hasn't seemed to give me the outcome I'd like. I started out thinking I wanted to learn about coding, then changed to creating a global classroom. Although those are both great subjects, they don't express my passion about teaching.

I've spent many hours thinking about this project, wanting to give it my best, and just hoping some "genius" idea would pop into my head. I found myself digging into what I do during my free time. What do I think about? What do I do? What do I wish to change?

While attending TCEA, exploring new and innovative technologies, and getting a little refreshed, I spent more time thinking about my driving question. I stopped by a booth that had these really cool stools. These stools literally took my breath away. I thought about what my classroom would look like with those stools. How would they change the classroom atmosphere? And more importantly, how would they change the learning experience for my students? These stools got me thinking about my experience at Google in November. Let me just say that going to Google was awesome! I felt energized there. I felt like I was able to think and search outside my comfort zone. It was a place that I felt I could "thrive" in. The Google environment was so inviting, very refreshing, and almost unreal. It was so different compared to all the other work spaces that I've experienced. It was innovative.

After contemplating all these questions and thoughts, it lead me to wonder how would changing my classroom's environment encourage student thinking, enhance creativity, and improve behavior?

These realizations have lead me to my new driving question, one that I didn't expect or see coming. But with that said, I feel good moving in this direction. I feel passionate about mixing up what is thought to be normal and creating something totally different and unique.

As of right now my plan is to research the idea of renovating my classroom and come up with a new floor plan for my classroom. One that will encourage student thinking and positive behavior. My "new" classroom will promote risk taking and will allow a safe place for children to thrive. I want there to be a designated place for "break" time. This classroom will be designed with the modern student and teacher in mind. My second step will be to begin working on some Donor's Choose grants for furniture that will compliment the new space.

I finally feel like I'm moving forward with this genius hour project for Digital Fluency... It's only taken me months to figure it out! :)

Genius Hour

Hello all!! I'm so excited about getting time to work on our DF Genius Hour project in class! I began Genius Hour with my students in my classroom about two weeks ago and it is going great! My students love it! It is a very simplified version, but I'm hoping to continue and grow it as I learn more!

My topic/ driving question for our DF project is: How can we/ ways to code in Kindergarten? I'm sure I have some tweaking to do and I definitely have lots to learn so that I can implement coding in my classroom with my students!

I'm excited about this is experience and can't to see the outcome!
